The 3rd Conference on China Urban Development International Conference on Urbanization and Urban Transformation in China(First Announcement)

The 3rd Conference on China Urban Development
International Conference on Urbanization and
Urban Transformation in China
(First Announcement)

China has experienced accelerated urbanization since 1990s. By 2010, the rate of urbanization exceeded 50%. During the process of urbanization, numerous urban problems have gradually emerged due to complex interactions of population explosion, traffic congestion, environmental deterioration, and regional inequalities. These emerging urban problems require an elevated scholarly attention and swift policy measures to relieve and resolve them. Because of these challenges to Chinese cities, the "new-type urbanization" was proposed by the state government as national strategy and China's future development roadmap. This new urban development strategy will facilitate imperatively China’s future economic and social transformations in the context of globalization, urbanization and marketization.

To promote sharing and exchange of ideas, opinions, and perspectives on urban development and regional socio-economic changes, we are inviting scholars in the field of geography, urban planning, demography, sociology, anthropology, political science and other cognate disciplines to discuss these significant issues collectively in order to create a new vision for China’s urban futures.

In 2010 and 2012, the 1st and 2nd Conferences on China Urban Development were held by the University of Hong Kong and Hong Kong Baptist University, respectively, which both had made important influence. To improve academic research, promote interdisciplinary studies and share research experience and findings on the issues of urbanization and urban transformation in China and beyond, the Center for Modern Chinese City Studies at East Normal University (ECNU) will hold the 3rd conference on China urban development in ECNU, Shanghai, June 5-7, 2015.
